21st Century Education

Service learning is an educational approach that combines learning objectives with community service. It enables students to apply their academic skills in real-world contexts while addressing authentic community needs through analysis, problem-solving and, collaboration.

Action in the PYP

The PYP promotes a student-led and meaningful approach to taking action. Learners should feel like they have made a difference to the world after taking action, whether it be big or small. Action in the PYP is separated into:

  • Participation
  • Advocacy
  • Social Justice
  • Social Entrepreneurship
  • Lifestyle Choices

Service & Action in the MYP

MYP students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service — making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

Service as action is an integral part of the programme which can be referred here.

Creativity, Activity Service in the DP

One of the three core elements all DP students must complete. The three strands of CAS are:

  • Creativity – arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
  • Activity – physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the DP.
  • Creativity – arts, and other experiences that involve creative Service – an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. The rights, dignity and autonomy of all those involved are respected.thinking.

In order to demonstrate these concepts, students are required to undertake a CAS project which can be viewed here.

Essential Aspects of Service Learning

  • DIA partners with local and global organisations, providing students with opportunities for meaningful community engagement.
  • Students research, reflect, plan, and act to address authentic issues, showcasing their skills through meaningful advocacy.
  • Contextual and practical learning experiences.
  • Creating an environment that links the curriculum to authentic action.
  • CAS projects aim to infuse service learning while cultivating creative problem-solvers who take purposeful action for positive impact.
  • A service learning continuum has been developed by the school from K - 12.
