Action, Community & Service

Action - learning by doing & experiencing

Service - actions which evolve beyond doing for others to engaging with others in a shared commitment towards the common good

PYP (Primary Years Programme)

In the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Action is one of the five Essential Elements of the Programme. Here at DIA, we see students taking Action, nearly every day. Sometimes the action taken may be a simple as the students sharing their knowledge and learning with friends or family, or a bigger step and going out into the community to put what they have learned into action to make a difference.

Additionally, as a PYP wide action, we have been implementing Worthwhile Wednesday. Worthwhile Wednesday takes place twice a term, where a grade level takes ownership of the day. They plan a day where students give back to the community by bringing in items to donate, raising money for charities, cleaning up a beach, etc. On this page you will find pictures of students and the action they have carried out!

MYP (Middle Years Programme)

In the MYP all students are expected to partake in Service & Action regularly. Ideas for ‘Service as Action’ projects may be initiated by teachers, coordinators, the curriculum and by students themselves. Projects may be done individually, in small groups or as a class. When completed as a small group or a class, each student is still responsible for demonstrating their engagement and reflection in their own process journal. The community served by the project could include home or religious communities, the school community or part thereof, wider Dar es Salaam, Tanzania or even a global community. The student will be responsible for identifying which type of action can effectively address an authentic need in their identified community. They are expected to:

Become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth
Undertake challenges that develop new skills
Discuss, evaluate and plan activities
Persevere in action
Work collaboratively
Develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding
Consider the ethical implications of their actions
